A Lesson in Self Discovery {How to be the You God made You to Be}

Dear Girl, remember, who you are – your passions and personality are meant for more than just you!  You being the you God created is as important as the earth shining is to our ecosystem.  So know the truth about who you are, remove the clouds shadowing your passion and personality, and dare to make your dreams a reality.  In the end, you discover you, by uncovering you and gathering the courage to be you.

How I Discovered Myself

How do I know who I am?

I’ve been asking myself this question a lot and here’s what I’ve uncovered…

I don’t think the question is so much ‘how do I know,’ but rather, ‘how do I be?’  You know how the sun sometimes suddenly bursts through the clouds on a rainy day and everything around you is suddenly shining with warmth and hope?

The sun never stopped shining.  The clouds just covered it up – blocked it’s light and strength.

I think it’s the same with us.  I am always me.  You are always you.  We have always been us.  But between the winds and rain of life the real us got covered up.  We didn’t mean to we just did.

We never stopped being us.
But between the winds and rain of life
the real us got covered up.

We wanted to please someone who valued proper behavior more than expressive joy, so we dampened our enthusiasm for life.  We thought highly of someone who didn’t’ think “sparkle” was a color so we settled for purple.  We loved our parents who wanted us to have a degree and earn lots of money, se we pursued an engineering degree instead of majoring in music.

Every change was meant well, but every change made the brilliant us foggier.

Eventually we became so much what others wanted us to be that we became completely dependent on what other thought of us.  Our life quickly became a blown-and-tossed-by-the-wind kind of story as we tried to be who we thought we were supposed to be.

So, now that we’re here, how do we pull back the clouds so we can let our light shine through?

KNOW THE TRUTH
First of all, know the truth.  This is like knowing the sun still shines.  No matter what, the sun is always shining – that’s the truth.

So, let the truth that you were created in the image of God, sink in (Genesis 1).  You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).  You are not an accident.  You are precious and important in the kingdom of God.

These are some of the irrefutable truths of who you are.  You did not make these truth possible, but they are true, nonetheless.  They do not change based of your feelings or the opinions of others, because they are truth.

Knowing the truth allows you to live
unhindered by lies and the ideas of others.

Knowing the truth sets you free to let go of anything that entangles so that you can live well unhindered by lies and the ideas of others.  Write these truths down.  Make these statements that God makes about you more important than the statements other people make about you. Then the clouds won’t be able to dampen or block your rays.

UNCOVER YOUR PERSONALITY AND PASSIONS
I can’t imagine a life where every day is as gloomy as the last few days of winter where everything is grey, one day runs into the next, and I start to believe the sun isn’t shining anymore.  But that’s exactly how we live when we let other’s opinion dampen who God made us to be.

Our personality and passions are a piece of God in us.

I believe that our personality and passions are a piece of God in us.  After all the bible does say we were made in the image of God.  Please know, I am in no way saying that we are without sin, I still yell at my siblings, disrespect my parents and waste time on facebook.  But I think the things we so easily let go of so other people like us are some of the very things God intended to express Himself through us to the world.

John Piper makes a powerful point in “Desiring God” when he says:

God is more glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.

One of the ways I choose to be satisfied in God is by delighting in the personality and passions He has given me.  Delighting in who He made me takes my eyes off of me and puts my focus on Him.  That’s when I become satisfied in who He is in me.

Remember how finding yourself is more like uncovering the you God made?  And how finding you requires removing the clouds of “people pleasing” so that personality and passions God gave you can shine through?

Good.  Now, ask yourself these three questions:

  • What do I love?
  • What am I good at?
  • What would you change if you could?

BE BOLDLY YOU
What if the sun decided it didn’t want to be hot, because I complained in the summer of getting burned?  Or what if the sun decided not to shine so brightly because it hurt someone’s eyes?

In order to shine, the sun must know the truth:
it was created to shine.

It would be trying to please us and make us happy, but the sun would be disowning the way it was created.  Soon we would have too much ice in the ocean and the plants wouldn’t be able to grow without the brightness.   Before long the ecosystem would cease to operate all because instead of delighting in what it was created to do the sun decided to become what we asked of it.

By trying to please one person the sun off sets everything for everyone else.  The sun must know the truth that it was created to shine.  The sun must not let the clouds drown out it’s light.  And, the sun must shine boldly regardless of someone’s complaint, because it’s dreams were meant for more than one person.

Paul, when writing to Timothy, said it this way: “do not neglect your gift” (1 Timothy 4:14).  A more modern rendition says, “you know all those things you want to do, you should go do them.”

You know all those things you want to do,
you should go do them,
because they are meant for more than just you.

Why?!  Because God is a dreamer and He sets dreams in our hearts.  As we pursue those dreams we get to know Him and become more like Him.  Not only that, we fulfill His purpose for our lives.  Just like the sun heats the sand on the seashore and dares the sunflowers to bloom.  I know it’s scary and sometimes throws other people off kilter, but you are called to be boldly YOU for the glory of God.

So, pick something – ONE thing – from your list of answers and write down one thing you’re gonna start doing!

And remember, who you are – your passions and personality are meant for more than just you!  You being the you God created is as important as the earth shining is to our ecosystem.  So know the truth about who you are, remove the clouds shadowing your passion and personality, and dare to make your dreams a reality.  In the end, you discover you, by uncovering you and gathering the courage to be you.
